Translating something you already know and are passionate about into a business is the way to go.  You are prepared to be the guide and make your customer the hero.  I think it is possible to take something you have no experience in, reverse engineer how to be successful and make it happen but it is much harder.  I have failed more than than succeeded from a project number perspective by reverse engineering, but have won on a dollar volume and learning standpoint.
